As UK Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach noted, the Dual Mode Brimstone’s advanced technology makes it “ideally suited for the environments we’re in – Iraq and the Middle East today.” This is due to Brimstone’s dual sensor technology –a semi-active laser sensor and integrated millimeter-wave active radar seeker working together to hit stationary and high speed moving targets.

Brimstone’s single-shot, first pass accuracy also minimizes the risk of collateral damage, which is particularly important as enemy combatants often attempt to hide among civilian populations. At present, current UK Royal Air Force GR-4 Tornado fighters equipped with Dual Mode Brimstone missiles are targeting ISIL targets in Iraq. These facts have been highlighted by Prime Minister David Cameron:

“Britain has unique assets that no other coalition ally can contribute: the Brimstone precision missile, which minimizes the risk of civilian causalities, and which even the U.S. does not have.”

The following four videos depict Brimstone’s single-shot, first pass accuracy against ISIL targets in Iraq: Nov 17: RAF Strike Against ISIL Vehicle – Nov 3: RAF Strike on ISIL VehicleOct 20: RAF Destroy ISIS Main Battle Tank NEar Ramadi –  Sept 30: RAF Tornado Strike on ISIL Armed Pickup Truck in Iraq

The UK Government has reported the following details about eight of the Brimstone strikes taken so far against ISIL in Iraq:

  • November 03: “A GR4 patrol again provided support to the Kurdish forces near Sinjar. A Brimstone missile destroyed a terrorist weapons cache”
  • August 20: “A Tornado patrol located two mechanical excavator vehicles near Mosul, which the ISIL terrorists were using to construct fortified positions to defend against the Kurdish peshmerga’s recent successful offensives in the area. Both of the vehicles were destroyed by our aircraft using Brimstone missiles.
  • “The following day, a Tornado patrol near Ar Rutbah located another pair of engineering vehicles which were being used by the terrorists to construct defense, and these were both destroyed by direct hits from Brimstone missiles.”
  • June 11: “Two Tornado GR4s provided close air support to advancing peshmerga near Sinjar who had come under fire from an ISIL sniper team located in an isolated building; this was demolished by a direct hit from a Paveway. The GR4s then flew south to assist the Iraqi army near Ar Rutbah, where they used a Brimstone missile to destroy a terrorist armoured personnel carrier.”
  • May 19: “On Sunday, GR4s again supported Iraqi army operations in the Bayji area, and safely destroyed with a Brimstone missile a car-bomb which the terrorists had positioned ahead of the advancing Iraqi troops.” See the video here.
  • April 13: “An armed reconnaissance patrol of Tornado GR4s provided air support to an Iraqi military operation, clearing terrorists from positions to the north of Ramadi… GR4s provided further support to the same Iraqi operation the following day, during which
they engaged an ISIL armored vehicle with a Brimstone missile.”
  • April 07: “Around midnight on Friday and into Saturday, a further Tornado patrol conducted an intensive series of successful strikes to help disrupt an attempted ISIL attack south-east of Mosul. The first target was a vehicle which was hit by a Brimstone missile. Two more Brimstones and four Paveway IVs were used against an armed pick-up truck and five terrorist positions.”
  • March 29: “A Tornado patrol provided close air support to Iraqi forces near Tikrit, and the accuracy of the Brimstone missile system allowed a successful attack to be conducted on a terrorist armourer personnel carrier positioned under a road bridge.
  • March 27:  “Tornado GR4s from RAF Akrotiri conducted an armed reconnaissance mission on Friday 27 March in the Mosul area, in the course of which they identified an excavator being used by ISIL to construct defensive positions against continuing Iraqi and Kurdish offensives to liberate the local population from oppression by the terrorists. A Brimstone missile made a direct hit on the vehicle, destroying it.”
  • March 17th:”On Tuesday 17 March, a Tornado GR4 patrol conducted extensive reconnaissance work before investigating reports of engineering equipment in use by ISIL to build defensive positions. Two excavators were located and destroyed with a Brimstone missile and a Paveway IV guided bomb.”
  • March 15: “On Sunday 15 March, a GR4 patrol was back in northern Iraq, operating over Mosul. Knowing that the Iraqi forces plan at some point to launch an offensive to retake the city from the terrorists, ISIL have been making efforts to construct defences in and around Mosul, and the GR4s were able to disrupt some of this engineering work with Paveway and Brimstone strikes. In a similar fashion, a further Tornado mission in the early hours of Monday morning conducted a Brimstone attack on a vehicle being used to create defences at Anah, near the Haditha Lake.”
  • March 14: “Tornadoes flew in support of the Iraqi army to the north-west of Haditha. An ISIL armored personnel carrier and another armed terrorist vehicle were identified, and both were struck by Brimstone missiles.”
  • March 13: “Tornado GR4s patrolling ahead of the latest peshmerga offensive near Kirkuk. An armed ISIL truck, which had been firing on the Kurds was destroyed with a Brimstone missile.”
  • March 11: “In the early hours of Wednesday 11 March, a Tornado patrol located a camouflaged 130mm heavy artillery piece near Al Qaim in western Iraq, and destroyed it with Brimstone missiles.
  • “February 24: “The early hours of Monday morning saw a Tornado patrol operating in the far west of Iraq, conducting an armed reconnaissance mission searching for terrorist movement across the open desert. An ISIL armed vehicle was detected, and attacked with a Brimstone missile.”
  • February 06: “On the morning of Friday 6 February, an RAF  Tornado GR4 patrol worked closely with a coalition surveillance platform to provide overwatch for Kurdish peshmerga, who were engaged in close combat with ISIL – also known as Da’ish – terrorists near Mosul. When an ISIL mortar position opened fire on the pehsmerga, the GR4s were able to respond with a Brimstone missile which scored a direct hit.”
  • February 06: “Early on Saturday morning, another Tornado pair patrolled western Iraq, near Al Qa’im, close to the Syrian border. Two heavily armed ISIL trucks were identified and attacked with Brimstone missiles. The GR4s also located an ISIL armoured personnel carrier and conducted a further Brimstone attack; initial analysis indicates that all three vehicles were destroyed.”
  • February 3: “In the early hours of Saturday morning, a Tornado GR4 patrol located a group of armoured personnel carriers being used by ISIS and attacked them with a combination of Brimstone missiles and Paveway IV guided bombs.”
  • January 29: “Near Baa’j, the Tornados investigated a reported ISIL checkpoint, which was being used to prevent the local civilian population from being able to move freely. The checkpoint, which included a guard room and an equipment storage area, was destroyed with Paveway IV precision guided bombs. Nearby, the GR4 patrol also located an ISIL armoured personnel carrier, and successfully attacked it with a Brimstone missile. The Tornados, based at RAF Akrotiri, were as usual supported by a Voyager air-to-air refuelling tanker, and continue to operate alongside Reaper remotely piloted aircraft.”
  • January 21:”Early on Wednesday, 21 January, a pair of Tornado GR4s also flew in support of Kurdish troops, a Brimstone missile struck a heavily-armed ISIL truck and a Paveway IV guided bomb was used to target a terrorist observation post. Initial reports indicate both attacks were a success.”
  • January 5: “Tornados again patrolled the Al Qaim area, where they destroyed an ISIL excavator vehicle, used to construct fortified positions, with a Brimstone.”
  • January 2: ” A Royal Air Force Tornado GR4 armed reconnaissance patrol located an ISIL armoured personnel carrier to the east of Al Qaim, and conducted a successful strike with a Brimstone missile.”
  • December 25:  “A Tornado patrol returned to the Al Qaim area, tasked with investigating a checkpoint used by ISIL to stop the local civilian population from moving around freely. 2 Brimstone missiles were used to attack a fortified position and a shipping container which had been converted into a guard room. A second pair of GR4s operated further east, and located two armed ISIL vehicles concealed amidst trees on farmland close to the Euphrates, south of the Hadithah Dam. Both vehicles were struck with Brimstones.”
  • December 23: Royal Air Force Tornado GR4s, operating out of RAF Akrotiri, conducted an armed reconnaissance mission near Al Qaim, close to the border between Syria and Iraq. 4 ISIL armed pick-up trucks were identified, widely dispersed, near a quarry. They were successfully engaged using a combination of Brimstone missiles and Paveway IV guided bombs. Wednesday saw both Tornados and Reaper aircraft providing support to the Kurdish peshmerga, as they consolidated their recent victories over ISIL. A Tornado patrol identified an ISIL armed vehicle at a large former Iraqi military compound, and attacked it with a Brimstone missile…”
  • December 23: “In Anbar province, where the Iraqi army is conducting a number of offensive operations, RAF Tornados GR4s on an armed reconnaissance mission were tasked to investigate a group of vehicles near Ar Rutbah in the early hours of Saturday morning. Four ISIL armoured personnel carriers were identified and successfully attacked with Brimstone missiles.”
  • December 17:”The same Tornado patrol then flew 150 miles south to provide support for an additional offensive against ISIL in Anbar province. They were tasked to destroy a checkpoint near Rawah, used by the terrorists to deny local people any freedom of movement along a major road. An attack was conducted with a Brimstone missile on a guard room and equipment store used by those manning the checkpoint.
  • December 12: “RAF Tornado GR4s were also providing surveillance for the Iraqi army in Anbar province, and were able to assist Iraqi soldiers engaged in a firefight with terrorists near Ramadi. Paveway precision guided bombs and Brimstone missiles were used to deal with ISIL fighting positions and 3 vehicles, including 2 armoured personnel carriers.”
  • December 9: “In the north-west of the country, a patrol of RAF Tornado GR4s was tasked by coalition air controllers to investigate an ISIL site near Mount Sinjar. The aircraft identified an observation tower and guard room in use by the terrorists at a checkpoint controlling a road junction. These were being used to deny the local population any freedom of movement and both were attacked with Brimstone missiles.
  • December 8: “Early this morning, a fourth Tornado patrol operating in north-western Iraq, around Mount Sinjar, located 2 ISIL armoured personnel carriers and hit them with Brimstone missiles.”
  • December 7: “2 Tornados were on reconnaissance when Iraqi troops reported coming under fire from terrorists in the vicinity of Bayji. The RAF aircraft responded rapidly, and when they arrived on the scene were able to spot the ISIL position. Since the target was in a built-up area, a very careful assessment was made in cooperation with another coalition surveillance aircraft, and the aircrew used the small and extremely precise Brimstone missile to carry out a successful attack which struck the enemy position.”
  • December 6: “In the early hours of Saturday morning, a further GR4 patrol in the same area (ISIS position near Rawa in western Iraq) also successfully attacked an ISIL armoured personnel carrier using a Brimstone missile.”
  • December 3: “Two RAF Tornado GR4s were tasked to investigate reported ISIL activity near Fallujah. A group of ISIL vehicles, including armed pick-up trucks and lorries, was identified and, having confirmed that there were no civilians or friendly forces in close proximity, the jets dropped a cluster of Paveway IV precision guided bombs on the vehicle group. A single truck appeared to survive the initial strike, but was accounted for by a Brimstone missile.”
  • December 1:   “Early on Saturday morning, a Tornado GR4 patrol investigated a reported ISIL compound near Tal Afar in north-western Iraq and found a group of armoured personnel carriers. These were successfully attacked using Brimstone missiles. In the early hours of Sunday morning, a further pair of Tornado GR4s, whilst on an armed reconnaissance patrol, came to the support of Iraqi forces engaged in a major firefight with ISIL near Tikrit. Two terrorist positions were identified, and despite the close proximity of the Iraqi troops, the precision of the Brimstone missile system allowed both targets to be engaged without risk to friendly forces.”
  • November 27: ” British forces have conducted further air missions to assist the Iraqi government’s military operations against the ISIL terrorist organization. RAF Tornado GR4s, working in close conjunction with RAF Reaper aircraft, flew over northern Iraq in support of Kurdish peshmerga who have made several advances against ISIL in recent days… The GR4s then joined the Reaper in a combined attack on a group of 9 ISIL vehicles; a mixture of armoured personnel carriers and armed pick-up trucks. The group was struck with a combination of Brimstone and Hellfire missiles, and Paveway IV bombs.”
  • November 15th:  “Tornado GR4s conducted an armed reconnaissance patrol over western and northern Iraq… [The Tornados] were tasked to strike an ISIL communications vehicle, which coalition forces had previously identified. A single Brimstone missile was used to conduct an attack.”
  • November 4th: “Two Tornado GR4s, flying in support of Iraqi army units in the area surrounding Bayji north of Baghdad, used a Brimstone precision guided missile to successfully destroy an ISIL armed pick-up truck.”
  • November 3rd: “Two RAF Tornado GR4s were tasked to investigate ISIL activity near the scene of an earlier successful coalition air strike at Al Qaim, north-west of Baghdad. The aircraft, as part of the international coalition supporting the Iraqi government, identified and destroyed an ISIL armed vehicle using a single Brimstone missile. RAF Tornados were involved in further attacks…as a Brimstone missile was again used to attack a heavily armed ISIL pick up truck.”
  • October 20th: “Two Tornado GR4s, while on an armed reconnaissance patrol, were tasked to attack an ISIL main battle tank which coalition forces had been tracking near Ramadi. Following extensive surveillance to ensure that there were no civilians nearby the tank was destroyed in a precision attack using a Brimstone missile.”
  • October 19th: “RAF Tornados were involved in further successful airstrikes on ISIL terrorists who had attacked an Iraqi military convoy south of Fallujah. Brimstone missiles were used to hit the ISIL forces, including 2 trucks, ahead of additional attacks by other coalition forces in the area which were supported by UK Tornados.
  • October 7th: “Two Tornado GR4s were tasked to support the Iraqi Army. Brimstone missiles and Paveway IV guided bombs were used to conduct a successful precision attack on ISIL terrorists who were firing on Iraqi troops from a stronghold near Ramadi.”
  • October 1st: Two Tornado GR4s from RAF Akrotiri conducted an armed reconnaissance mission in support of Iraqi government forces west of Baghdad. They were tasked to examine a location suspected of being used as an ISIL command and control position. At the scene they were able to identify ISIL activity and 2 vehicles, one of which was an armed pick-up truck. Four Brimstone missiles were used to conduct a precision attack on the vehicles. Initial analysis indicates that the strikes were successful.
  • September 30th: In the course of an armed reconnaissance mission from RAF Akrotiri, 2 Tornados were tasked to assist Kurdish troops in north west Iraq who were under attack from ISIL terrorists. On arriving overhead, the RAF patrol, using the Litening III targeting pod, identified an ISIL heavy weapon position which was engaging Kurdish ground forces…The patrol identified an ISIL armed pick-up truck in the same area and conducted an attack on the vehicle using a Brimstone missile. An initial assessment indicates that both precision strikes were successful.”
